Aug 9, KNT: The indefinite strike of Taxi Operators in Kargil entered 6th day on Monday. On Monday, as a mark of solidarity a complete shutdown was observed by common people in Kargil. All shops and business establishments remained closed. The strike is being observed against the order of Divisional Commissioner Ladakh in which he has barred taxi operators from Kargil to ply freely on interior routes of Leh. The Kargil Taxi Union is demanding permission to ply on all inner routes of entire Ladakh Union Territory. “When Ladakh is one union territory then what is the fun of this ‘diktat’. Why drivers from Kargil are not allowed to ply on interior routes of Leh? This is grave injustice and speaks volumes about discrimination,” one of the protesting drivers told news agency Kashmir News Trust. He said they met Divisional Commissioner Ladakh Saugat Biswas who informed us that the order has been rescinded. “If this order has been rescinded and taken back, why then it is not being implemented on ground? Why Kargil based drivers are still being barred from plying on the inner routes of Leh,” he said. The protesting drivers accused Divisional Commissioner of Ladakh of bias and discrimination saying Div Com has failed to carry out his duties in a professional manner but is taking sides and creating a wedge between Leh and Kargil.
