Mumbai: ‘Donate your blood, get 1 kg chicken or paneer in return’

BMC corporator Samadhan Sarvankar has organised the blood donation camp in Mahim-Worli Vidhan Sabha area.

Mumbai: In a unique initiative for a blood donation drive, a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) corporator from Prabhadevi has announced an incentive for those who would donate their blood. As part of the campaign, blood donors can either take home 1 kg of chicken or paneer, depending on their food habits.

Senior Shiv Sena leader Sada Sarvankar’s Samadhan Sarvankar will on December 13 organise a blood donation camp at the Rajabhau Salvi Ground in New Prabhadevi in partnership with the Lower Parel-based KEM hospital. The timings of the camp have been set from 10 am to 2 pm.

Those planning to donate blood will have to register themselves for the cause before December 11 at the Shiv Sena Shakha 194, near Saamana Press. The aim is to collect 1,000 units of blood. So far, over 300 donors have registered.Notably, donors must be between 18 and 50 years of age.

The idea of distributing chicken and paneer struck me when I read on the World Health Organisation’s website that poultry and dairy products are a good source of protein and vitamins, besides being immunity boosters. Since it’s a pandemic era. So I decided to give all blood donors chicken or paneer as per whether they are vegetarian,” the corporator as saying.

Earlier this month, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had urged citizens of his state to donate blood voluntarily in the wake of the depleted blood supply. In a statement, Thackeray had said that blood collection has been hampered due to the work from home policy implemented by a number of corporate houses that used to collect blood in large volumes before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The colleges which are an important source of blood collection are closed due to pandemic. There are also problems in blood collection due to work from home implemented by many big corporate houses, who used to collect it in large volumes before the pandemic,” Thackeray had said.
