The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari said in an event on Monday that he will soon sign a file that will mandate the automakers to make engines that can run completely on bio-ethanol.“I am going to sign a file in the next 2-3 days, in which carmakers will be asked to make engines that can run on 100% bio-ethanol (or flex fuel),” Gadkari said in the event. The Minister also said that he has had a talk with major automakers of the country including Toyota Motor Corporation, Suzuki, and Hyundai Motor India who have assured him that India will soon have vehicles running completely on bio-ethanol like Brazil, America, and Canada. He also added that he is soon going to have a car himself that runs on green Hydrogen. The move is intended to encourage people to use such cars in future. What Is Bio-Ethanol Or Flex Fuel?Bio-ethanol or Flex-fuel, or flexible fuel, is an alternative fuel made of a combination of gasoline and methanol or ethanol. It is made by Indian farmers using rice, maize, corn, and sugar. It is called flex-fuel because it can be used both as an additive in petrol as well as an alternative. It is completely an environmentally-friendly fuel. The move will help reduce the pollution as well as the import cost of fuel for India which is currently eight lakh crores and can rise up to 25 lakh crores if the petroleum product import continues.Gadkari also added that soon the wastewater from the rivers will be used to make Hydrogen which will then be used to run vehicles on Hydrogen across the country. In August, Gadkari had announced that it will be made mandatory for auto manufacturers to offer vehicles with the option to switch to biofuel in six months.
